Crazy October and The Boys

Sunday, November 6th, 2011

Now that it’s November, I can exhale.

Any photographer can tell you about how autumn is the most insane time of the year. Everyone wants family portraits while we have great mild weather and nature’s own beautiful, colorful backdrop when all the leaves ripen, it’s a busy wedding month, we come up on the deadline to get albums submitted to be printed before Christmas, and that’s not to mention all the editing involved.

October is my favorite month, for the aforementioned mild weather and colorful leaves, but I feel like I didn’t even see it this year, except through my clients’ photographs. And that is really a beautiful thing in and of itself, honestly – to witness the changes week by week and notice how subtly, and sometimes suddenly, nature can change. When you’re photographing every weekend, it’s easy to keep track of in your mind, to look backward and tick off the weather and the stages of the month at each wedding and portrait session I was lucky enough to be a part of. And when you look at it that way, I may have taken more notice of October while being fully engaged in the whirlwind of weddings and portraits than if I hadn’t had a thing at all to do. And that realization just reinforces the love I have for my career.

Because of the whirlwind though, I am WAY behind on blogs. I promise to get some catching-up done this week and I’m going to start right now, with some photos that I snuck in of my boys last month. I’ve mentioned before that one of my favorite places in the St. Louis area is Laumeier Sculpture Park, so that’s where we went for these shots. We still need family photos done, but getting pictures of them is a good start! Kadin (my older one) is turning into a little model. Max is still the one I have to chase around and coax – but turned it out that if I allowed him to pose himself, he fully cooperated, so I pretty much just said, “Go over there and sit however you want.” Score!

So here are my munchkins, and stay tuned this week for four engagement sessions and a family session!

Sammie and Tim – Married!

Friday, September 16th, 2011

Sammie and Tim were married last Saturday, under an overcast sky white and gray. It may have been raining… in fact, it either did rain during the ceremony, or it started right after. A furious downpour that felt like a sigh, the kind of sigh that you make when you’ve just witnessed an act of devotion and love so sincere, it floods your soul with ache and warmth. And very appropriately, that was the feeling of the entire day. Sammie said to me, “it’s good luck to rain on your wedding day!” She was right.

I don’t know if I’ve ever cried so much at a wedding before… the emotion was so palpable, and Sammie and Tim, so gorgeous in their love.

I didn’t know these two before they hired me to do their wedding, but you wouldn’t have known that by their wedding day. I feel like I’ve known these two forever. Sammie and I are Facebook friends and I watched her and Tim’s daily countdown to their wedding day of reasons why they love each other, and if you know how much of a hopeless romantic I am, it didn’t take me long to fall in love with their love. And once we did their engagement session? I wanted to adopt Sammie as my best bud. She’s got this flair for vintage style, same as me, that makes me want to spin her around, giggling. And Tim? This man is amazing, and ladies, you all missed out! Be jealous of Sammie! A perfect gentleman, with a bit of old school bad boy charm. Like James Dean mixed with Cary Grant. Sammie and Tim are PERFECT together.

The rain cleared up by the time we finished family photos at the church, and off we went in our caravan of vehicles for pictures. We were lucky to have quite a bit of time together and I got so many amazing shots of these two that I’ve been crying AGAIN as I have been editing! Especially the part where Sammie’s Dad Bruce had the DJ play “I Love You, Samantha” and danced with her… being another Samantha, I couldn’t even help myself.

So here we are, their beautiful 9-10-11 wedding day:

Sammie's Mom putting her Grandmother's necklace on her

Jenny, the Maid of Honor, and Sammie before the ceremony

Tim ushered his Grandmother down the aisle...so sweet.

Here comes the Bride!

Tim's face as his Bride enters

Sammie and her Father

I loved their unity candle!

Tim says his vows to Sammie while he places her ring on her

Sammie says her vows and give Tim his ring

They embrace...

...and they Kiss!

Mr. and Mrs.!

I LOVE smiling kisses!

The Gentlemen

Sammie and Jenny laughing - Sammie had the BEST Bridesmaids!

A St. Louis staple!

You two are absolutely gorgeous.

Superman cufflinks from Sammie (great choice, Sammie!), and that James Dean charm...

Tim and Sammie's first dance

Cutest icing fight ever

Tim's Mom smiling up at her little boy, all grown up.

Bridal Party dance!

Sammie and her family and friends made a slideshow for them... Sammie was cry-laughing!

This is Sammie breaking into tears as she realizes that the DJ just put on \”I Love You, Samantha\”, from her Father… I think I looked the exact same way behind the camera!

Sammie and Tim – your day was amazing. You two are a shining example of what true love, passion, respect and happiness are – what life itself is all about. You two are foundations of stone for each other, and beacons of and I hope that I am able to see your family grow through many long years of joy and love.

With love, Congratulations!

FAQ Tuesday – The Explanation Behind “Arms Up” and the Bird

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

The backside of my business card.

I often get asked about my logo and business name, and since my business name was a really random, and yet still personal decision, I often go all blushy when I’m asked about it. Not only that, I get a little flustered trying to explain it to people because it was a bit spontaneous and also, honestly, because I’ve considered changing it a hundred times.

I thought it might be easier to write about it here, and from now on when I’m asked, I can just redirect folks to my blog. It might save me the explanation and blank stares in the middle of bridal party photos a few times – so here goes nothing!

When I came to the decision that I was going to be a photographer, and was going to make a business out of it, I was in the process of going through a divorce. At the time I didn’t know exactly what kind of photography I wanted to do, and was as attracted to fashion as I was stock photography and everything in between. Because of a few personal hang ups with my name, the first being that my last name was my soon-to-be-ex-husband’s name, and the second being that the name I go by most frequently (my short name, ‘Sam’) is sexually ambiguous, and by that I mean that it could be a girl’s or boy’s name, I decided that I would choose and work under a company name and assume a ‘D.B.A.’

Side note: even though I’m divorced, my ex and I get along really well and we both are very active in the lives of our two little boys. In fact, because our boys are pretty involved in sports and whatnot, we often see each other every weekend, sit by each other when we do, and I still consider him a close friend. He’s not my husband anymore, but he is still family.

I spent near a week making list after list of business names that felt like they represented me. I didn’t want a business name that would lock me into a particular kind of photography, like ‘Bears & Bellies Photography’ or “TaterToddlers Photography” or “Pin Up Couture Photography”, etc. I focused on names that represented me, my heart, and my passion. Names that I can recall were:

-Tiny Bird Photography
-Free Spirit Photography
-Cloud 9 Photo Art
-Bluebird Photography
-Due North Photography

All fabulous names, I thought; all names that I felt said something about the kind of person I was, or things that I liked. And all were already spoken for.

List after list, all already in use.

After several days of that, I decided that forget it, I’d just use my name and be done with it. But something kept nagging, tugging at my ponytail, something itched and irritated me about it and I found myself struggling with taking action on the matter, avoiding going to sign up for ‘samantharennphotography.com’.

I didn’t really want to give up on the business name thing, so I started thinking a little abstractly. In pictures mostly, the kinds of pictures that I wanted to take. The kinds of pictures that really shook people down in their souls. A singer on a stage in front of thousands of people. An athlete half a second after they scored the winning goal. Children playing, yelling, running, laughing… tiny carefree sprites, bounding happily along. In every picture I envisioned, there was joy, rapture, triumph – and that’s what I wanted, that’s when I realized I wanted to take pictures of people most of all. And in every photo I envisioned, the subjects had their arms raised to the heavens.

For me, it was a fitting visual and I ran with it. I later I captured my son Max playing in the backyard with a stick, and here he was:

I couldn’t help but smile, and that image completely solidified the name for me.

So what’s the bird all about, then? First off, I love birds. They represent freedom to me. To go as you please, go where you please, and whenever you please. If there’s sky, you can go; no necessary preparations, no worries. And I wanted Arms Up to represent this soaring joyous feeling, this absolute freedom – pictures that represent you, in the moment, free of static posing, free of stale looks. Free to feel what the people in the pictures felt, just as acute as they felt it in that moment. Free as a bird, to soar on the joy of the occasion – whether that occasion is a pregnancy, a wedding day, the birth of a child, a birthday, your 5th anniversary, or just because you found your missing puzzle piece and are in love so incredibly you can’t stand it, but pray like mad every night that it will never, ever end. I wanted what would become my brand to represent soaring emotions, and the bird thing just felt right.

So that’s the explanation behind it. I hope still, years later, that what I was originally trying to convey comes across, and every time I get asked about it, I get nervous that the person asking won’t get it and will think it’s stupid. But I hope that the majority of people get it, and I hope this FAQ will help those who don’t get it right away (because it is a bit abstract, I know).

Happy Tuesday, Everybody!

WeddingChannel Deal!

Monday, March 21st, 2011

My WeddingChannel deal launched today and I’ve already gotten an incredible response! Go check it out and take advantage of an amazing deal while it lasts! The deal is a Bridal Boudoir, Fashion or Trash the Dress session for only $50 – these sessions are normally $250! I am discounting them for a limited time because I want to do MORE of them – get a great deal now while they are a steal.

Here’s the link: http://deals.weddingchannel.com/deal/st-louis/arms-photography

To get an idea of what Boudoir and Trash the Dress photos look like, check out the links below:

Boudoir: click here

Trash the Dress: click here

And if you are a little unsure of what a ‘Bridal Fashion’ shoot might include, let me explain – it can be one of two things. You can don your wedding gown and your Groom can wear a handsome suit or dressy get-up prior to (or after) the wedding and do a fashion-inspired shoot, either in a studio setting or somewhere outdoors, to get more ‘portraits’ of the two of you incase your wedding day schedule is really hectic. (By portraits I don’t necessarily mean traditionally posed; think modern and elegant, spontaneous and gorgeous). Or – you can don your gown and do a fashion-inspired shoot, modern Bride style. Again, this can be out and about or in a studio set-up (or both), depending on the look you want, and you get treated like a Super Star Super Model for a few hours in your amazing wedding dress. These shoots are a blast, both with the two of you or just the brides, and I am excited to be running this deal to do some more!

So go on and check out the WeddingChannel deal, book me up, and let’s go party with my cameras!

Ready… Set… Off the Starting Line

Monday, March 7th, 2011

One week into March, I find myself once again doused in chaos. And in the midst of it all, of the constantly ringing phone, the constant emailing, the constant editing, the constant shooting, the constant allergy-combatting with Sudafed and Claritin, I have to smile and admit that I am the happiest woman in the world, to be launched off the starting line of the 2011 Wedding Season.

If you ask any wedding photographer what their schedule looks like this time of year, I’m sure it would be relatively close to mine. It is continuous correspondence, with couples looking for a wedding photographer, couples who want to schedule Spring engagement sessions, families who want Spring family portraits… and you also have weddings to shoot, editing to do, and all the administrative tasks as well. It’s a little crazy, but I actually enjoy talking with people and getting out to shoot after being holed up all winter. Especially THIS winter. What a doozy.

And it’s not just my work schedule that gets crazy in the Spring; both my little boys also start sports – football for Kadin, soccer for Max – so life is a constant juggling act. Max has an April birthday and Kadin has a May birthday, so parties also have to be planned this time of year. And there’s always the thought of bikini season hiding just around the corner in the back of my mind, so I try to get in workouts too, as much as possible. It is an exciting season, full of laughter, joy, happiness, gratitude, and utter exhaustion.

And 99% of the time, I wouldn’t have it any other way. The other 1%… well, I fully admit to indulging the fantasy of booking a flight to Tahiti.

Right now, I’m loving every minute of it. Bring on the Spring!

Future-Vision

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

It’s always exciting for me to take stock of where I am in the present and realize how far I’ve come since starting my business. I enjoy looking back over all the pictures and remembering all the people I’ve met through living my dream, and I find it utterly amazing. So many people I never would have had contact with otherwise, and I count my blessings to have been invited into their life through a shared appreciation for my photography. I am so humbled thinking on being invited to witness one of the most important days of their lives! It really is amazing and I send so many thanks to each and every one of them (and hope to see them all again soon, whether for maternity, newborn or family portraits!)

Equally exciting as looking at where I am in the present, is looking to the future. Through those special goggles, the vision is half-dream, half-reality; I see everything I have scheduled for the 18 months ahead, and also everything I WANT to have scheduled. All the photos I want to have featured. All the potential and open space for amazing things to happen!

I think forward to where I might build, expand, improve, go bigger; and also things I could outsource or cut out altogether to make my life easier and allow myself the time for doing what I am truly passionate about. A studio space has really been occupying my mind lately, but there are a lot of personal things up in the air right now and I am in a bit of a limbo status. By summer’s end, though, I should be able to finally straighten my line of little ducks and make major plans to propel myself forward and really rock the wedding photography industry. Balancing this craft and my home life hasn’t been easy, but I started with no knowledge of how to really run a business at all but knew this was what I wanted. So I just jumped headfirst. And while it’s been difficult, and I wouldn’t have survived it without the support of some very amazing people, especially my fantastic boyfriend Jeremy and the fantastic Ms. Alice Renn, I have scraped through it with grace and tenacity blessed to me by my maker and have grown sevenfold since I started this endeavor thanks to all my fantastic clients and those special few family members (and friends whom I consider family) who lent words of wisdom and encouragement, babysitting skills, and even cold hard cash so that I could keep pushing in the direction of this dream. I might be the one taking the photos, but they are the ones that deserve all the credit!

Looking forward, I see all the amazing couples that I get to work with, and share in their beautiful love stories. I can’t get enough of it, and am really excited to start 2011′s wedding season this weekend! Through my Future-Vision Goggles I see myself about to plunge into one HECK of an awesome year!

xo to those who have repeatedly offered their undying support. I wouldn’t be here without you!

January’s Boudoir Marathon

Thursday, February 17th, 2011

This post has been a long time coming, but I was holding off until after Valentine’s Day.

This boudoir marathon was the first one I’d ever done, and it was such an incredible learning experience (I’d done boudoir before, but not a marathon). I studied boudoir posing for months in preparation, and was lucky to work with some absolutely gorgeous and really rad ladies. The hotel was also spectacular and even though this was branching out from the norm for me, I really had a blast with it and look forward to another marathon in 6 months or so. Most of my photographic focus is weddings and I don’t want to detract from that, but I really love boudoir and especially approaching it with fresh eyes, so that I don’t get into a stale ‘technique’. I’ll be doing this again, and habitually!

I tried to do a selection of classic and artistic poses with each lady, borrowing from fashion, modern boudoir and each lady’s personal tastes. I had my iPad and each of us went through some pictures and picked out what they liked before we started, and we also talked a lot beforehand too. The entire day was a blast and it was great for me that each lady liked something a little different…I like having to think about what I’m going to shoot before I do it. It pushes me to think creatively, to question, “how might I do this in a different way?” I enjoy the intensity of having to ‘create’, and the whole day was very artistically satisfying for me. I left the hotel knowing that I got great pictures, and couldn’t WAIT to start editing.

To the ladies who came out for absolutely gorgeous photos, THANK YOU so much! You were all a blast and I really enjoyed talking and laughing with you during your sessions. You are all GORGEOUS!!! xo

Here are a selection of shots from the entire day (my favorites of the more ‘vanilla’ photos, except for one that’s a bit racy but I LOVE it!). I hope you enjoy, and please leave a comment to let me know your thoughts!

Under Control

Monday, February 14th, 2011

The past few months have been a little crazy, juggling a whole bunch of web and logo design and redesign… and I can finally say, with confidence, that it is finally under control.

That is a feeling like no other, finally getting things situated the way you want them to be. I have to say, I’m so glad that it’s all worked out. It took a lot longer than I wanted, but with a lot of hard work, learning as I went along, stubbornness and perseverance, I feel like the site and blog here are now settled for a while and I can get back to focusing on what I love – taking pictures!

I managed to delete everything that was here before, so I’ll have to repost Megan and Kevin’s engagement session, but I’ll also be blogging the Boudoir Marathon (I’ve been saving that for when these sites were active and finally sorted). There’s a lot of blogging to catch up on, and I’m very pleased to now be able to get back to it!

Thank you all for your patience and support while I was going through a design rehab. It has been trying and very educational… but yes, I’m glad it’s over, and the websites are back under control.
