Terah and Derrick – Married!

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

If you ever have the luck and pleasure to meet Terah and Derrick, one thing is for certain: you WILL walk away smiling. These two, especially when together, exude such joy, light and, dare I say it, silliness. Derrick has the most infectious sense of humor and Terah’s smile and laugh are so beautiful that it’s impossible to be in a bad mood around them. I experienced this a little bit during their engagement session (and from them I got one of my most favorite pictures EVER; they’re in the slideshow at the top of this page!) but there were so many spontaneous bursts of joy and laughter during the course of the wedding day that I came home feeling high on life and had to stop for a cherry limeade (one of my favorite things in the world) on the way.

Terah and Derrick were married at the Provincial House Chapel at UMSL, which you’ve seen on my blog before under a half foot of snow. On this achingly gorgeous June day, however, there was nothing but golden sunshine. The entire chapel was lit up with afternoon/early evening light and my, oh my… it haloed the entire event and everyone who stepped into the chapel. The girls were getting ready at the Sheraton Clayton Plaza Hotel, which is also where the reception was held. I had the opportunity to work with the very lovely Simonne and Jerry Bolla as well, who were handling videography for the event. (You should check them out! Click Here.)

I could go on forever about how amazing these two are. Seriously.

We started at the Sheraton, where Terah was helping Jordan, her ringbearer, get ready while all her bridesmaids got dolled up. We ended up taking Derrick’s present with us (that’s me and the Bollas), so when we all arrived at the chapel I tracked him down and made him open it.

Terah finished getting ready at the Chapel – her dress was PLATINUM. That’s right, silver. It was amazing on her! And look at those purple shoes!

We finally wrestled Derrick away from everyone to open his gift from Terah. It was a beautiful letter, that he did his best not to cry while he was reading, a sexy new watch, and socks – incase he got “cold feet”. Cute!

Terah had a gift from Derrick as well, and I had the pleasure of delivering it.

Here’s her reaction! It was a gorgeous little silver trinket box that had “Foxy Lady” engraved on the top!

After the gift exchanges, it was TIME! Here’s Derek waiting on his Bride:

These two are some of the most beautiful children I’ve ever seen!

Terah looks at her mom just before she joins arms with her to give her daughter away!

The Kiss!

(P.S. – I love these two pictures of them coming out of the chapel! That’s what I was talking about, always laughing, happy, smiling! Come on, I know you giggled when you saw them! Infectious!)

After the ceremony, the guests headed back to the Sheraton for cocktail hour, but we stuck around for some photos. Prepare yourself for some more of that same T&D Fox fabulousness. Ready?

Some of the finer details of the day:

Derrick’s Groom’s Cake. Terah surprised him with this! Derrick is a musician and teaches music, and she had this cake special made as a music stand, book of music, and a director’s baton. He LOVED it.

The Matron of Honor, Reem, tells us all how Derrick made the BFF and sister Checklist of Approval during her speech.

The Best Man, Derrick’s cousin Delarris, gives Derrick a little trouble during his toast.

First Dance!

Many, many Congratulations Terah and Derrick! It was such a pleasure working with you two, and your wedding day was an incredibly beautiful, joyous occasion. Here’s wishing you a lifetime of nothing but love and laughter!

FAQ Tuesday – The Explanation Behind “Arms Up” and the Bird

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

The backside of my business card.

I often get asked about my logo and business name, and since my business name was a really random, and yet still personal decision, I often go all blushy when I’m asked about it. Not only that, I get a little flustered trying to explain it to people because it was a bit spontaneous and also, honestly, because I’ve considered changing it a hundred times.

I thought it might be easier to write about it here, and from now on when I’m asked, I can just redirect folks to my blog. It might save me the explanation and blank stares in the middle of bridal party photos a few times – so here goes nothing!

When I came to the decision that I was going to be a photographer, and was going to make a business out of it, I was in the process of going through a divorce. At the time I didn’t know exactly what kind of photography I wanted to do, and was as attracted to fashion as I was stock photography and everything in between. Because of a few personal hang ups with my name, the first being that my last name was my soon-to-be-ex-husband’s name, and the second being that the name I go by most frequently (my short name, ‘Sam’) is sexually ambiguous, and by that I mean that it could be a girl’s or boy’s name, I decided that I would choose and work under a company name and assume a ‘D.B.A.’

Side note: even though I’m divorced, my ex and I get along really well and we both are very active in the lives of our two little boys. In fact, because our boys are pretty involved in sports and whatnot, we often see each other every weekend, sit by each other when we do, and I still consider him a close friend. He’s not my husband anymore, but he is still family.

I spent near a week making list after list of business names that felt like they represented me. I didn’t want a business name that would lock me into a particular kind of photography, like ‘Bears & Bellies Photography’ or “TaterToddlers Photography” or “Pin Up Couture Photography”, etc. I focused on names that represented me, my heart, and my passion. Names that I can recall were:

-Tiny Bird Photography
-Free Spirit Photography
-Cloud 9 Photo Art
-Bluebird Photography
-Due North Photography

All fabulous names, I thought; all names that I felt said something about the kind of person I was, or things that I liked. And all were already spoken for.

List after list, all already in use.

After several days of that, I decided that forget it, I’d just use my name and be done with it. But something kept nagging, tugging at my ponytail, something itched and irritated me about it and I found myself struggling with taking action on the matter, avoiding going to sign up for ‘samantharennphotography.com’.

I didn’t really want to give up on the business name thing, so I started thinking a little abstractly. In pictures mostly, the kinds of pictures that I wanted to take. The kinds of pictures that really shook people down in their souls. A singer on a stage in front of thousands of people. An athlete half a second after they scored the winning goal. Children playing, yelling, running, laughing… tiny carefree sprites, bounding happily along. In every picture I envisioned, there was joy, rapture, triumph – and that’s what I wanted, that’s when I realized I wanted to take pictures of people most of all. And in every photo I envisioned, the subjects had their arms raised to the heavens.

For me, it was a fitting visual and I ran with it. I later I captured my son Max playing in the backyard with a stick, and here he was:

I couldn’t help but smile, and that image completely solidified the name for me.

So what’s the bird all about, then? First off, I love birds. They represent freedom to me. To go as you please, go where you please, and whenever you please. If there’s sky, you can go; no necessary preparations, no worries. And I wanted Arms Up to represent this soaring joyous feeling, this absolute freedom – pictures that represent you, in the moment, free of static posing, free of stale looks. Free to feel what the people in the pictures felt, just as acute as they felt it in that moment. Free as a bird, to soar on the joy of the occasion – whether that occasion is a pregnancy, a wedding day, the birth of a child, a birthday, your 5th anniversary, or just because you found your missing puzzle piece and are in love so incredibly you can’t stand it, but pray like mad every night that it will never, ever end. I wanted what would become my brand to represent soaring emotions, and the bird thing just felt right.

So that’s the explanation behind it. I hope still, years later, that what I was originally trying to convey comes across, and every time I get asked about it, I get nervous that the person asking won’t get it and will think it’s stupid. But I hope that the majority of people get it, and I hope this FAQ will help those who don’t get it right away (because it is a bit abstract, I know).

Happy Tuesday, Everybody!

The Mann Family

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

I met Amanda last August when I attended the St. Louis Photographers Shot Party last year. She was late because she had to work, but she got there and we hung out and chatted for a short while and she took my picture with Jasmine Star for me. Since then I’ve been following her around the internet and keeping tabs on my new friend. Turns out she is a wonderful photographer, not to mention a stellar mom and all-around fantastic person. Her smile is incredibly infectious.

She asked me to do some family pictures for her, because being a photographer I can tell you how difficult that really is to do for yourself, and I most exuberantly accepted. She is married to the fabulous James Mann, who does this crazy ice racing stuff. That’s how they met, actually; James was in town for a race.

These two have a very, VERY adorable little man together named Landon, who likes to race, and likes to jump off of things, and likes fountains apparently, and is pretty much just a perfect little boy. He was so funny during this session! Reminded me that my two boys are growing up too quickly!

Here is a sampling of the beautiful Mann family – Enjoy!

Ashley and Justin – Engaged!

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011

Ashley and Justin met at school down in Springfield. She was dating some other dude but Justin was cooler, and I can vouch for the fact that he is. They met me downtown with their crazy/sweet doggie Lola, and because they are huge Cardinals fans, we started there.

Their first date was at a bowling alley, so of course I geeked out over that and we went over to Flamingo Bowl to grab a few adorable photos there. They changed first so they’d have something other than their Cards gear on. After that we hit up City Garden to get a few ‘normal’ photos but these photos are anything but normal – friggin’ gorgeous is more like it! I think those are my favorite of the bunch!

These two are awesome. They put up with me being a nerd and were completely natural in front of the camera. I felt like I was working with professionals. They are so much fun and Ashley is as sweet as a Mississippi mud pie. Their wedding isn’t until next June, and I can’t believe I gotta wait a whole year to see them both dolled up and saying vows to each other, but I do so love long engagements (they make the day even more sweet!).

Ashley and Justin, thank you both so much for having me as your photographer. And congratulations!

Aubrey and Todd – Married!

Tuesday, June 7th, 2011

Aubrey and Todd had a beautiful wedding at Quail Ridge lodge in Wentzville on Memorial Weekend. It threatened to rain on us all day, and I kept sullenly looking out the window (let’s be honest, it was a very rainy spring!) but luckily, the rain held off and they were granted an absolutely gorgeous day, even if overcast, for their outdoor ceremony.

I started off with Aubrey and her Bridesmaids at Image Makers Salon & Spa in Lake St. Louis. It was fun watching Aubrey get all curled and veiled! I always enjoy meeting with the girls before the ceremony. Girl time is the best time! Then we headed to the hotel to get dressed.

Upon arriving to Quail Ridge, Todd hid while Aubrey came in and ran to the bathroom so they wouldn’t see each other. I got busy taking some detail shots and ventured outside to check out the gorgeous custom aisle runner! I love monogrammed and custom details!

The ceremony was so sweet and I loved how Aubrey and Todd involved so many of their families’ children. Their daughter Reese was one of the flower girls – she got to ride in the wagon with a very handsome little man named Gage, the son of one of the Bridesmaids and Groomsman (Christina and Michael).

Afterward we took a break for some photos while everyone headed inside the lodge to relax until the caterers arrived. We had a ton of fun, and I was so excited that Aubrey wanted ‘fun’ pictures! Jump, ladies!

The Maid of Honor Nickie had a warm and funny speech, but the Best Man Brian and his spiel about his ‘wolf pack’ was hysterical. And Todd smashed cake in Aubrey’s face, but she forgave him awfully quickly (I think because she managed to keep the red velvet off her dress!).

Aubrey and Todd, you guys had an amazing day and I’m so honored to have been a part of it. I hope you thoroughly enjoy your honeymoon – you SO deserve it! Many Congratulations you two!

Amanda and Kyle – Engaged!

Monday, June 6th, 2011

I had a great time getting to know these two during their engagement session. Amanda is perhaps the sweetest girl I have ever met – she’s one of those quieter people that blossoms as you get to know her. And Kyle is just an all-around good guy; fun and light-hearted.

We hit The City Museum for their engagement photos because it was a new place for them (Kyle had taken his kids there only once before and Amanda had never been) and they wanted something interesting, different and fun. I think we managed that! We were trying to get a lot accomplished in as little time as possible, because they were on their way to Lake of the Ozarks for a weekend trip. I hope you two had a great time down there!

I can’t wait to work with these two more – we might try to work in another Engagement session in the Ozarks before their September wedding, because Kyle (and now Amanda and Kyle together) spends a lot of time down there. I really hope that works out – I love getting to shoot in new places!

Many congratulations on your engagement, you two! I can’t wait to hang out with you both again!
